By IMSU Team
If you’ve ever hung a mirror at the end of a hallway or placed a bed against the same wall as the doorway in a bedroom and thought, ‘this doesn’t feel right’, you could have been tapping into the principles of Feng Shui.
Moving beyond the physical blueprint of your home, Feng Shui can help homeowners create a more balanced look and feel throughout their home by utilising centuries-old design principles.

What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that focuses on creating harmony between people and their home environments. It translates to “the way of wind and water” and essentially focuses on creating a sense of ‘flow’ within an entire building and individual rooms.
By arranging spaces to balance natural elements and layout, Feng Shui considers factors such as light, colour, furniture placement, and orientation to encourage a sense of balance and calm within homes.
Modern Feng Shui is used as a design philosophy that blends cultural tradition with mindful living. It promotes spaces that feel calm and functional through design choices that respect balance, intention, and living needs of living.
What are the Principles of Feng Shui?
There are four guiding principles in Feng Shui:
Chi
Chi is referred to as the ‘life force’ of your home environment and is a significant principle for designing your home using Feng Shui.
Bagua
Bagua refers to the ‘energy’ map of your home and means ‘eight areas’ in Chinese. These areas are related to specific life areas, such as the kitchen, where you eat, or the bedroom, where you rest.
Commanding Position
Commanding position refers to the space in a room that is furthest from the entry point or doorway, with a direct view of the entry, though not directly in line with it. It determines where you should spend the most time in a room (for example, where you might place a sofa or bed) for the best Feng Shui.
Elements
Feng Shui has five elements: earth, metal, wind, water and fire, which should all be balanced throughout your home for optimal Feng Shui.

Feng Shui Tips to Try For a Balanced Home
Feng Shui may have been around for centuries, but it’s experiencing a resurgence as people seek to create a stronger sense of calm and ease in their homes. Below are five simple Feng Shui tips that can be applied in any house.
A clear and centred entryway.
Whether it’s the front door, the back door, or a side entrance, whichever entry you use most frequently to enter your home is known as the ‘mouth of qi’ – where energy also enters. Keep this space clear of clutter and welcoming with doormats, plants and warm colours.
A guiding hallway.
Hallways direct energy through your home, so they should feel open and free to move along, rather than blocked or cluttered. Artwork and soft lighting can create a calm and balanced flow in these spaces. Avoid placid mirrors at the end of hallways as they can reflect energy out of your space.
Create the right mood with lighting.
Any designer or architect will advise that lighting is an essential aspect of any home, and it plays a significant role in Feng Shui as well. Natural light for the day and soft, adjustable lighting for the evening are considered ideal, as they help create calm and focus. Opt for roller blinds over slatted ones, as these break up light as it enters a room, creating a more fractured mood.
Focus on balancing each room.
Use the principle of bagua to guide furniture placement. Place your largest or main piece of furniture at this point, and add other pieces thoughtfully without overcrowding the space. Use a mixture of elements – wood furniture, natural textiles, heights and shapes – to create stability and coherence.
