Modo - IMSU

The Brief

The vision for Modo centres on a contemporary family home with a distinct architectural identity, shaped around the ease of life in North Curl Curl. Generous shared spaces, a connection to the garden and room for changing family needs inform the brief, alongside a desire for privacy within an established residential setting.

Balancing openness with retreat is central to the approach. Spaces for entertaining and everyday gathering sit alongside quieter settings for work, guests and time apart. The coastal context suggests an emphasis on natural light and outdoor living, expressed through a restrained palette, tactile materials and confident architectural form.

The Design

Project: Modo pairs dark vertical cladding with pale brickwork and timber, establishing a façade defined by contrast and depth. A curved upper corner softens the composition, while tall windows and a recessed entrance framed by vertical screening introduce a measured balance of openness and enclosure. At the rear, the kitchen, living and meals areas open to a generous alfresco. A double-height void above the living space creates a defining architectural moment, bringing scale and daylight into the centre of family life. A separate study and a flexible media or guest room with an adjoining ensuite allow the ground floor to accommodate different routines.

Upstairs, four bedrooms and a separate sitting area provide space to retreat, with the rear master suite supported by a walk-in robe and ensuite. The arrangement gives Modo its balance: expressive architecture at the street, generous shared spaces within, and privacy carefully considered throughout.
