The Brief

Our clients came to us wanting a contemporary Beacon Hill home with a strong architectural identity, but an interior that felt calm, practical and easy to live in. They were drawn to darker, tactile materials and wanted the facade to offer a sense of privacy without becoming closed or defensive.

The plan also needed to support different rhythms of family life. Generous shared spaces would bring everyone together, while a separate lounge and a ground-floor guest suite with its own ensuite would allow visitors or extended family greater independence. At the centre of the brief was a kitchen, dining and living zone designed to operate as one connected social space, with a direct relationship to the alfresco.

The Design

Project: Soma gives that brief a distinctly graphic expression. Pale face brick forms a grounded lower frame, while dark vertical cladding defines the upper storey. A gabled volume and fine aluminium battens create depth across the facade, screening the upper glazing and sharpening the home's silhouette. The recessed entry sits between the garage and full-height front glazing, with timber introducing warmth against the monochromatic palette.

Inside, the kitchen is organised around a generous island and walk-in pantry, opening into dining and the main living area before extending to the alfresco. The separate lounge remains removed from this activity, while the guest suite establishes a more private zone at the front of the home. Upstairs, four bedrooms are arranged around a separate sitting area. The master suite includes a walk-in robe and ensuite, while the central stair void adds openness through the level.

Across the home, the planning mirrors the facade: strong, ordered and deliberate, with moments of warmth and privacy layered into a confident contemporary form.
