Wander around any busy inner-Sydney suburb, and you’ll stumble across dozens of bold, quadrilateral custom homes brimming with contemporary cladding and crisp, undulating lines.
But venture into less populated regions, and you’ll notice an alternative – the coastal farmhouse. A mainstay of lower-density coastal and country zones, this homely architectural style blends country and coastal charm.
In this post, we’re examining the hallmarks of the coastal farmhouse style, including its key interior and exterior design elements.

What Is Coastal Farmhouse Design?
As the name hints, the coastal farmhouse combines classic Aussie beachfront architecture with homely country farmhouse-style design.
Coastal farmhouse sits somewhere between a 1960s fibro beach house and a genteel Southern Highlands manor. Designers incorporate pastoral-inspired elements for a traditional feel, along with earthy textures and an airy maritime palette.
Don’t expect modern design elements like exposed concrete. The coastal farmhouse emphasises a mid-century aesthetic over contemporary trends, combining two traditional styles into a functional living space.
Given the coastal-meets-country aesthetic, this refined design isn’t common within highly urbanised, inner-city lots. You’re much more likely to see one around Pittwater than Parramatta.

The Key Elements of Coastal Farmhouse Interior Design
Designers draw on a range of elements to cultivate coastal farmhouse interiors.
Coastal Colours & Textures
Rough textures and a maritime-inspired palette bring the sensation of the ocean indoors. Many feature whitewashed walls with smooth, deep-marine or light-blue hues. Natural fibres, such as jute and rattan, create coarse, earthy textures in furnishings and decor.
Traditional Country Charm
Architects can add a country touch through high ceilings and uniform board-and-batten or shaker-panel walls. Galvanised metal fixtures, such as sinks, taps, and light fittings, enrich the country aesthetic.
Timber & Tile Floorings
Matte tiles and timber floorboards are the go-to coastal farmhouse choice. Light blonde oak is a classic, though some designers use greyed wood to imitate driftwood. Distressed or reclaimed brick can complement entryways, while honed, matte-stone porcelain or ceramic tiles work wonders in the bathroom.

How To Spot A Coastal Farmhouse Facade?
A multitude of design choices comprise the quintessential coastal farmhouse facade.
Earthy Materials
Coastal farmhouses use natural textures to evoke an earthy aesthetic. Modern materials, such as polished marble and glossy mahogany, rarely feature. Instead, designers use a mix of timber, stone, brick, and metals in light natural hues.
Soft-white cladding
White or beige weatherboards are a long-standing favourite. However, organic materials like wood are prone to degradation in our harsh Australian climate. For extra longevity, some designs use composite or fibre-cement cladding, which mimics the rustic weatherboard look.
Moderately-pitched roofing
Tall, moderately-pitched roofs add countryside character and pay homage to traditional farmhouse design. Most coastal farmhouses use Colorbond roofing to withstand wet coastal climates, with a natural or beige tint that complements the cladding. Gabled roofs above entranceways and living spaces enhance the elegant countryside feel.
Wrap-around verandahs
Timber wrap-around verandahs offer a shady, open-air space to sit and ponder or entertain guests. Coastal farmhouse verandahs typically feature traditional elements, such as timber posts and ornamental balustrades.
Windows & Doors
While floor-to-ceiling windows are rare, large window frames and traditional grid designs let plenty of sunlight flood inside. French doors are a coastal farmhouse favourite, while solid timber sliding and barnhouse doors offer a timeless alternative.
